How do you cope with wearing the socks/stocking in summer
  • Hi

I was wondering if there is a way to avoid wearing support stockings in summer. I have varicose vein on my right inner calf and have been wearing the tigh high stocking. I know I should wear them on both legs but as Joe I have been having problems keeping them up and I am very conscious that someone can see them.

Also as the summer coming i cannot imagine wearing them every day as you want to have bear feet. Can you just use a bandage on some days. Do you really need to wear the support stockings every single day and time (excluding sleeping) and can just one occasion when you stand or sit for a long time ruin all the hard work.

Sorry about so many questions I have more to ask.

    Thank you

  • Hi Klara,

Unfortunately, with the summer comes hot weather, and that's an aggravating factor for varicose veins. Warm temperature tend to dilate blood vessel even more than they normally do. I personnally now use 'open toe' compression stockings. They allow me to wear sandals during the summer. I use this model which is great.

I also usually carry an extra pair, so when I want to go swimming, lay on the beach or play volleyball on the sand, I can remove them. I then put the other pair after I'm done swimming or playing. Applying cold water on your legs and feet can also help you go without compression stockings for longer period of time.

If I have a lot of walking around to do, I will use this model (which is also 'open toe') and the Juzo Garter Belt. I have been using them for a month now and they are great! It really keep your compression stocking up all day. I can go to work, do the groceries and go to the gym and they are still covering my legs.

I hope those answered your questions.
  • Hello Marc,

Err this might be an odd question.  But as a male and wearing compression stockings do you wear shorts in the summer?  I only ask this question because it has been difficult to for me to do this -self -consciously that is.

I joined this forum because I too have been diagnosed with venous insufficiency...due to a DVT earlier in the year.  I HAVE noticed though, that I am now getting varicose veins that are extended from the calf and go up to mid-thigh.  After the DVT, I was told to wear thigh high stockings due to swelling/pain in the entire leg.  -Another thread I commented in explains that I wear the waist high stockings now due to complications with the thigh high.  I am at a pretty young age to where I should probably worry about my complications with venous insufficiency (age 25) especially since I've had a DVT at such a young age.  Family history: one side of the family has massive heart disease problems and the other side of the family have MAJOR complications with venous insufficiency (varicose veins, spider veins, vein blockage).

Now, with that said,  I know that I should probably not be too self-judging here on whether or not other people care what I wear, but I was wondering if you had any advice with coping with summer wearing and shorts....that is, if you are open about wearing compression stockings.

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    -Adam

  • Welcome Adam!
To answer your question, I rarely if never wear shorts. I find that it wouldn't be that worth it when your are already wearing compression stockings. So for me it's jeans and white pants during the summer.

    Have a great day,
    Marc
  • Oh ok Marc,

    Thanks for the info!
  • Hi Adam, I completely understand your self-consciousness. I was in the same frame of mind for years. I've been wearing them for 7 years. This year it was just too hot and I decided to go for comfort over style. I too wear the open toe thigh high and found a sheer version by Mediven that is much cooler. I graduated to capris and then to bermuda shorts. I won't say that I'm not still self-conscious but comfort won out...at least for casual day time wear. If I go anywhere for dinner etc. then I too will wear pants and am always on the hunt for light weight linen etc.  If you like outdoor wear I've become a fan of the quick dry pants since they too are cooler.
  • Hey there,

I have been wearing compression pantyhose hose several years because of CVI, I also have a blood clot disorder called Prothrombim 20210 so I need to wear daily from the time I get in the morning until I go to bed. I used to have reservations about wearing in public then slowly started wearing and I came to find out nobody has a problem with it. I literally wear shorts everyday where ever I go and have never had anybody laugh, say a negative comment, nothing. I just dress normal, shorts just above the knee slim fit, low hiking shoes, polo's or tees. I don't have much hair on my legs because of poor circulation, but what hair I do have I just shave. Nobody want to see hair under stockings, and the hose stay in place all day. So try to wear with shorts you will see nobody cares, you might see people look but it's usually for about 10 seconds then try just look away. If you ack normal and have confidence in your self its no problem. then you will get used to it and you will forget your wearing. Please, trust me try it.

  • I had the same concern - self-consciousness.  Compression thigh highs and pants are warm, so I troop around the house in shorts and my stockings, even in winter - but whenever anyone came to the door, I'd dash upstairs to put on long pants. My wife (bless her) said to stop fretting, that most people won't care, and those who do aren't worth worrying about, so I started venturing out to the mailbox in shorts.  No screeching brakes and gawking dog-walkers, so I kept pushing it.  Now, in my third summer, I go nearly everywhere in shorts, sandals and closed-toe compression stockings  (HATE bare feet in leather shoes!), unless the occasion is dressier.  I learned that not only don't most people care, they don't even notice!

One tip - if you're still afraid they'll gawk, look 'em straight in the eye.  They'll probably smile and never look down.  I learned that years ago.  At a house party back in the day, a lovely young woman engaged me in a conversation for 10 - 20 minutes.  She got right in my face and riveted me.  On the way home, my wife asked, "Did you notice anything unusual about her?"  I said no, other than, uhhh, she was really good-looking.

"She only had one hand." was her reply.

I'm not all the way home yet - With shorts in public, I'll only wear obviously opaque compression stockings in colors that match my skin tones, but the ones I have are 15-20 mm, and I really need higher compression.  I picked up some 20 - 30 mm stockings at a closeout price too low to resist, but they're sheer and dark, so I'm concerned someone will think I'm wearing regular women's nylons.  I'm working on it - maybe next summer.  Keep the faith and flaunt 'em!
  • I've been wearing thigh high compression stockings for years and have no probs whatsoever wearing them with shorts.  Also regarding summer temperatures - I've worn them in 40C temperatures no problem..
